You can never underestimate the power of communication. An apt and wonderful manifestation of the overreaching power of communication is in conversational hypnosis. According to definition, conversational hypnosis is the procedure that involves a person’s perception to be altered to respond to a specific kind of problem. The main principle in conversational hypnosis is interaction.
Conversational hypnosis starts with the stage called affinity. Before attempting to suggest a solution, the hypnotist has to first establish some kind of rapport with the patient. This can happen if the hypnotist makes the patient understand that he understands his situation completely.
To drive home the point, let’s say that a hypnotist is working with an agoraphobic person to address his fear of being in crowds. When the patient tells the hypnotist that “it is very hard to be in his situation”, the hypnotist should say in return that “I do understand what you’re going through. Yes, it is hard”.
After the hypnotist has established rapport with the patient, they can now delve deeper into the process of conversational hypnosis through distraction. This stage of the hypnosis involves the patient trying to sway the mind of the patient to think of something else other than the problem. This is often done by asking several questions that spur the interest of the patient.
To follow through with the example I made before, in order for the hypnotist to distract the patient, he can ask something along the lines of “what do you think it would be like if you lived all alone in this planet?” The question does not have to literally make sense as long as it is effective in distracting the patient.
Once the patient as his mind off his problem, the hypnotist can start suggesting different ideas and thoughts that lead to the solution of the problem. Because the patient has finally relinquished control over his problem by not thinking about it, the hypnotist could probably say things like “life is so much different if you talked to people” and the like.
